8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For,  “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil  and their lips from deceitful speech. 11 They must turn from evil and do good;   they must seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

Peter continues writing sharing characteristics for born again believers and how we are to live together as a witness for the Lord.

Humility is being humble in spirit.  Who are we in relationship to God? Many times, we may struggle with feelings of inferiority and low self-esteem. We don't match up. Humility is an attitude that we get when we get an awareness of our Creator and our relationship to Him. That's humility. The danger we often fight is pride.

The Christian is to be humble because he is constantly aware of his utter dependence on God and because he is constantly to remember that of himself he can do nothing. All we have physically and spiritually comes from the Lord.  The Christian  has new standards of comparison. He may well be worthy of pride when he compares himself with his neighbor. As a believer, he may think he is as good as any man, but the Christians’ standard of comparison is Christ. When we compare ourselves with the sinless perfection of incarnate love Divine, we have every reason to be humble.

The disciples were full of divisiveness, selfishness, ambition and rivalry. That's what the effects of  being a special disciple and an apostles does. Since they were especially chosen, they can glow in their status and responsibility. Jesus gave them a lesson: “the least one among you is the greatest. The one most like a child, dependent, and desirous of trusting me for everything is the honored one.  The one willing to be a slave is the highest among you.”

The day of crucifixion for Jesus came and all the disciples ran away. When Jesus appeared to them after the resurrection all that lust for power was gone. There now was much work to be done and no time for nit-picking. It is amazing, when the persecution started, how quickly the essentials took priority.

Ambition is at the heart of most leaders. The temptation is to use people to achieve their own personal agenda. Jesus tells us that we do not have to be successful, only yielded. I do not have to please any man, only God. The sign of spiritual maturity is pleasing Jesus who loved us and gave Himself for us.
