49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.” 50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” 51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James, and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.” 53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!” 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.
When this child, Jesus, of whom Isaiah is prophesying about comes, He would come with power. Not just the sustaining power, but with that power which is described in the scriptures as an overcoming power, breaking through power, victorious power.
Jairus, a synagogue leader, was desperate when his twelve-year-old daughter was dying of a fever. He traveled to approach Jesus, who agreed to come with him, but on the way everything goes wrong. He is approached by a servant and tells the man that it is too late; the girl had died. Jesus says, “Ignore this news, and just believe.”
When they get to the house, Jesus says, “The little girl is not dead, but asleep.” You know the end of the story, HE IS THE MIGHTY GOD!
This power changed the lives of those followers when they witnessed the mighty resurrection. This was evidence of what Jesus was able to do with those who made Him Lord of their lives both during His earthly life and in the millenniums that have followed.
C.S. Lewis, the author of the “Chronicles of Narnia”, also set out to investigate the evidence for Jesus. He began as an atheist, but in looking at the character of Christ, he wound up convinced Jesus was exactly who He said He was. Lewis’ words were that he was “dragged, kicking and screaming, into the Kingdom.” After he became a Christian, however, he was shocked at how much peace and joy he had, and he wrote a book about his journey called “Surprised by Joy.”
“A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic or a devil of hell. You must take your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us.”
Jesus knows you better than you know yourself. Since He is mighty, God Jesus knows all about you, what roads you have traveled. He knows what turns you have made. He knows what dead end streets you have been down. He knows your joys and your sorrows and calls you to join the throngs of followers.
Application: Christians have historically affirmed much more than this when we confess the uniqueness of Jesus Christ as the Son of God. TRUST HIM! Because He is MIGHTY GOD, you can trust Him to provide for you what you need.
Prayer: King Jesus, I believe You are the incarnate Son of God in whom the fullness of the Deity dwells in human form. Fully divine and fully human - the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
