WORD Defines Jesus’ Promise
John 1:1 “ In the beginning was the WORD and the WORD was with God and the WORD was God. He was with God in the beginning. “
One of my favorite comic strips is Calvin and Hobbes. One time Calvin is sitting at his desk in school, taking a test. He is quite dismayed when he reads the first question: “Explain Newton’s First Law of Motion in your own words.”
In the second frame, a big smile comes across his face as it is obvious as he has an idea.
In the third frame, he begins to write: “Yakka foob mog. Grug pubbawup zink wattoom gazork. Chumble spuzz.”
In the final frame, having made the answer in his own words, Calvin sits back with his hands behind his head and says, “I love loopholes.”
Sometimes communication can be really hard to understand. Sometimes communication is meant only for certain people to understand like an inside joke.
When the Jews understood part of the message of the Word of God it represented a promise. It was a message that was to be presented in a person. When the prophets of old were authorized to speak for God the way the phrase read in their introductions is this. “The word of the Lord came….to Isaiah, …to Jeremiah, …to Amos, and so forth. “The word of the Lord came” meant listen up. There is something He wants you to hear. There is a promise of what is going to happen. Usually, it was the word repent of your sins and turn to the Lord or you will be judged. Usually, it was a promise of hope or coming of the Messiah. That is a good word of the Lord.
You might be speaking to someone, and they give you their promise. They might say, “I give you my word.” That represents an oath, a promise, as good as the person’s reputation. “You have my word on it”, is an oath of truth or fulfillment of what they say they are going to do.
We have the Logos of God on it. We have His word on it. We refer to the Word of God as the Bible. We refer to the Word of God as the Son. We refer to the Word of God as the promises and prophecies given to mankind.
God is speaking a Christmas message telling us about His son. Simply, Christmas is about Jesus. It is not about family and friends. It is not about shopping. It is not about Santa Claus and reindeer. It is not about giving and receiving gifts. It is about Jesus!
There are some significant promises given that include the logos. Deut 8:3 is quoted by Jesus to Satan when he said, “Man does not live by bread alone, but every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Word gives life meaning and purpose. Jesus tells us how important our words are in Matthew 12:36 We will be judged by our words. It stands for our promises if we fail to keep them.
Mark 16:20 talk about miracles and what the miracles do is confirm the Word of God, so you know they are true.
It is in these ways that the Apostle John tells us the word of God stands for the person of Jesus who is Almighty God. It stands for power that creates the Universe and everything in them. It stands for the authority behind that name. But we can believe this word for as in any communication we know the truth and His promises will come forth.
There are two other places where John identifies Jesus as the word. Once in his little letter of 1 John and another place in Revelations: I John 1:1-2 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched-- this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us”.
Rev 19:11-16 “I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God.”
Listen to the promise in verse 14 “The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. "He will rule them with an iron scepter." He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”
John doesn’t mince words when he calls Jesus the Logos of God.
Application: Ponder this: He is Jesus and his name is the Word of God.
Prayer: Lord, give me a Spirit of Wisdom and understanding to comprehend that You are the Word of God.
