The Consequences - Matthew 7: 27

“The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

Luke 6:49b “The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete."

The came the storm, the flood, and the danger. The difference between the doer and the hearer comes at the end. It says the storm could not shake the house that was built on the rock, because it had been well built, but the other house “immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” This makes all the difference in the world. One house stood as protection, as the fortress, and as a shelter; the other collapsed and all was lost because there was no foundation.

Note the description of the fall: "And great was the fall of it." It is great because the eternal fall is forever. Once your eternal house has fallen you are doomed forever.

As an outward observer we probably couldn’t tell much difference between the two houses, or the two men. As they lived and were on display, we probably couldn’t tell much difference between the two men, thinking the one smarter because he saved money and got the job done quicker. However, the person who came out as a doer found safety, but the other was lost.

It doesn’t matter how elegantly the living room appears or how functional the kitchen is, or where we have the remote controlled garage door openers, fancy entertainment centers and Jacuzzis; everything depends on whether the whole structure will withstand storms.

Jesus is not talking about how to build a house. He is clearly talking about building lives by faith in Jesus Christ, Himself. Many hear but do not obey.

Don’t just be impressed with only His words, but what you’ve heard put into action. Be doers of His teachings or it will not do you any good. One preacher said, “you are a wise man when you walk in His ways, wisdom gives sensibility to one who knows, and security to one who has the power and stability in the circumstance that throw so many, but salvation is for all eternity for we are house builders.”

Application:  Consider today what kind of house are you building?

Prayer:  Lord, I seek You, I seek to build my faith on You and the firm foundation You have put before me in your Word.
