The Touch of the Master’s Hand - Matthew 9:18-21

18. While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.”  19. Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples. 20. Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. 21. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.”

When I was in high school speech class, I recited a poem in front of the class. Perhaps you heard of “The Touch of the Master’s Hand” by Myra Brook Welch. The teacher asked me to recite this again at her church’s women’s luncheon. I got time away from school and a high grade to give this presentation.

The poem is about an auctioneer who picked up an old violin and started bids for a dollar or two. Then an old man came forward, dusted it off and began to play music so sweet and pure. In poetic form the bid goes from dollars to three thousand. What made the difference? It was the touch of the master hand.

Many people have changed from drunkards into sober citizens. Many who have been cast aways are now responsible and godly, responsible people. God changes lives.

These New Testament Bible stories show crowds coming to Jesus in their great need. They have no place to turn. The sickness and death of a little girl was devastating. The desperate woman with bleeding has tried and tried to get help with doctors and continued to suffer.

Let’s be honest. Men, women, and children do suffer in a variety of ways - Christians and non-Christians alike. Despite all the emphasis we place on health, the advice given by a medical professor to his class remains. Most people will get well on their own, if you don't goof up the healing process, but there is still another more important truth. The mortality rate is still at 100%. You are going to die. All the medical discoveries will not change that. These bodies are not created to last forever.  God has another bodily design that He plans to give to His children that will last forever.  This body is just temporary packaging until we are delivered by the Holy angels to our permanent dwelling.

Whether your time on earth is days or years the temporary or everlasting healing ultimately comes from Jesus. Can we trust Him in sickness or in health, in life or in death?

Application:  Give each day to Him who loves us in ways we can’t imagine.

Prayer:   My Lord Jesus, I give you this day.   Teach me to use it for your glory, to number my days and to apply my heart unto wisdom.
