31. “I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." 32. Then John gave this testimony: "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' 34. I have seen and I testify that this is the Son of God."
What is involved in a testimony? A testimony is telling our story of our God encounter. No one else has John’s story. No one else has Paul’s story. No one else has Mary’s story. No one else has your story, only you.
A testimony involves three things: The life before Jesus; The experience with Jesus; and the results following your acceptance and faith in Christ. Everyone who has met the Lord has a story.
The experience of God’s encounter are similar in so many ways, but unique to each one of us. Not everyone’s story is dramatic. Some know they have a heart need and are presented with the news about Jesus and simply believe and follow.
God told John he would have a sign - the anointed one would have the Spirit of God descend upon him like a dove. Even before the baptism John knew. Matt 3:14 says “But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" When the heavens opened and there was the voice of the Father, the dove as the Spirit and the affirmation of the Son, the triune God was presented. John’s encounter was dramatic.
What is a witness? One who tells their story of what they have seen and heard. John knew that he should have been baptized by Jesus. John was the sinner, not Jesus. He knew that Jesus was the Son of God to take away sin. He fulfilled his purpose in pointing people to Christ and being the one privileged to witness this great event.
A witness tells their story. God does the rest to impress Himself on the hearers.
Application: Do you have a story to tell? It doesn’t have to be dramatic. God can use that and in the still small voice say to the heart that is ready to receive Him.
“This is my Son. With Him I am well pleased.” He is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Prayer: Abba Father, guide me in the time and place that You would have me tell my testimony. Thank you, Lord, for how You have guided me now in paths of righteousness for Your Names Sake. Amen
