Women Talk - Luke 1:35-40

35. The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37. For no word from God will ever fail.”

38. “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

39. At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40. where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth.

I've come to the conclusion that women are not easy to understand and I am not alone. D.L. Stewart writes "The woman who promised to love and honor decided that we needed a lamppost in our front yard. She observed, "We're the only ones on the block without a lamppost in our front yard. How are people supposed to find our place at night?"

"Simple," he replied. "Tell them to look for the only house on the block that's dark."

"What about burglars? What's going to happen if a crook comes along some night when we're not home and finds the place all dark?"

“I know exactly what's going to happen.  He's going to take three steps into the yard, fall over a big wheel, land in the pile of bikes, get up, twist his ankle on a soccer ball, and catch it right in the throat from a badminton net that hasn't been put away since Lyndon Johnson." I said

"Okay." she concedes. " I really think we need a lamppost in our front yard, but if you don't want one, I won't push it. It's entirely up to you. I'll go along with whatever you decide.  You are after all the lord of the house and the king of the castle"

"It's nice of you to be so understanding. I guess I could consider putting one in sometime."

 "Good. It's in the garage"

 "What is?"

" The lamppost. I bought it three days ago." She informed me.

When I was working for nursing homes, I worked with lots of ladies. Typically, conversations with a group of ladies are not the same as men. Some still try to deny the obvious because there are exceptions, but when I would wait for our patient conferences to begin the ladies would often begin conversations among themselves about clothes, hairdos, crafts, cooking, family, and when they didn't think I was listening, they'd talk about diets and of course, men.

I think most women have it all over men and that is, they are much more open to sharing their feelings. One of the leading complaints of wives about their husbands is that they don't talk. When they do, men tend to talk about facts, necessities of life and seeking solutions to problems. Wives more often want to know what we think and how we feel.  To be part of one’s life isn't just knowing what one did, but how they responded, thought, and felt about what they did.

As we are in the Christmas season, I want to discuss women talk.  The conversation in the passage was between Mary the mother of our Lord and her cousin, Elizabeth. As I read this passage, I asked myself, why was this meeting and conversation put in the Holy Scripture?  I think for these reasons. Christmas as it is recorded is a real story with real people. This gives insight into the people’s thoughts. Christmas, then and now is filled with human emotion in our various relationships. Christmas is filled with supernatural workings and awareness of the works of God which results in spiritual worship and praise to God.

We will see the importance Christmas as illustrated by these women in their conversation.

Application:  What types of things are part of your Christmas conversations with friends and relatives?

Prayer:  Lord, let me never forget the Supernatural6 working in the awareness of your presence during this holy season.
